WHAT'S ON IN JUNE 2006

I LAUNCH OF ROYAL PARK WETLANDS & COMMUNITY PLANTING ON THE "SKINK SITE"

Time:  11 am to 3 pm. At 12 noon there will be an official launch of the Wetlands by the Premier (There is an exclusive guest list- I tried unsuccessfully to get invitations for residents. Come anyway!)
Date: Sunday 4 June 2006 - World Environment Day.
Location: The Wetlands are on Oak Street Parkville (Melways 29 C11) adjacent to the Ross Straw Field and Manningham Reserve. The Community Planting will be on the Skink site on the hillside east of the Wetlands- starting at 11 am.  There will be a free barbeque lunch and a gift of an indigenous plant to take home.  I urge you to come to the community planting, it is very pleasant and usually the kids love it. It should all be sign posted.
Transport and Parking: Train to the Royal Park Station, walk west down Poplar Road then left into Oak Street.); Tram 68 North Coburg line (Sunday its No 68 ) to Park Street then walk west down Park Street, turn left into Oak Street.  Parking; If you come by car as Oak Street is likely to be parked out I suggest parking at the Zoo then walk down Poplar Road to Oak Street. (There is a short cut from the Station south west across the Park to the Skint Site - it should be signposted)
Naming of the Wetlands: RPPG members have been very unhappy about the name "Bellbird Waterhole".  We weren't consulted (it was not raised  at the Royal Park Master Plan Committee); there have never been "bellbirds" here not will there ever be; it's not a "waterhole"; the Aboriginal translation is incorrect.  In short the naming has been a bungle.  See Melbourne Leader of 31 May 2006 which reports on our concerns about the Wetlands. It will be on our website www.royalparkprotect.org.au

II RALLY FOR THE FORESTS ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Time: 11 am to approximately 3 pm (Unfortunately this clashes with the Wetlands Launch and  Community Planting in Royal Park but you could join the march for a time. )
Date: Sunday 4 June 2006
Location: Gather at the State Library in Swanston Street.  The march will be to Federation Square.
